Backyard Composting Made Simple
Backyard Composting is Super Easy
1. Select a dry, shady spot two foot by two foot to place your compost bin.
2. Add about 4-6 inches of brown material (mostly leaves) to the bottom of the container. Break sticks and twigs to small two inch size or smaller.
3. Begin to add your food waste and or grass clippings. These contain 85% water so you rarely will need to add water
4. Once you have piled a few layers of browns and greens on top of one another, insert a large stick all the way to the bottom and move in around in a circle several times and in several places in the compost bin. This introduces the 4th requirement for composting = air. Remember compost needs only needs browns (carbon dry), greens (nitrogen wet) air and water. The organisms will come and chomp away.
5. The smaller the additives, and more frequent the air probes the sooner one will have the dark rich color of compost ready to use ion lawn and in garden.
